Police have arrested 53 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations in the capital’s Vatara area.
They were arrested around 9pm on Thursday from a flat on the second floor of a building on Road 28, Block M, in Bashundhara Residential Area.
Vatara Police said the leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organisations had gathered at the flat to hold a preparatory meeting to observe the mourning day on 15 August and ensure the success of a flash procession. At the time, they were chanting various slogans while carrying placards and banners.
Acting on information, Vatara Police conducted a raid at the spot and arrested a total of 53 people.
Police said legal action against the arrested individuals is underway.
The DMP said its relevant units are conducting regular surveillance and operations to maintain normal law and order in the capital and ensure public safety. Law enforcement agencies remain alert to prevent any untoward situation centring on various programmes.
