A court in Chattogram has sentenced five members of a gang to death in connection with the murder of college student Fosiur Rahman Shawon, which took place 18 years ago.

The verdict was delivered on Sunday afternoon by Sixth Additional Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Muhammad Ali Akkas.

The convicted individuals who received the death sentence are Bellal Hossain, Zakir Hossain, Shahid Raja, Al Amin Gazi, and Md Sohel.

Chattogram Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the ruling, stating that although 15 people were originally accused in the case, the court handed down death sentences to five and acquitted the remaining ten due to insufficient evidence.

The case details reveal that on July 24, 2007, Shawon was murdered by strangulation with a towel by muggers who had boarded his CNG-run auto-rickshaw intending to rob him while he was travelling from a coaching centre at GEC intersection to Halishahar. Following the incident, Shawon’s uncle Khalilur Rahman filed a case with Kotwali Police Station.

The court delivered the verdict after examining the testimonies of 13 witnesses.
