Police have arrested three alleged members of a snatchers’ gang after Tk39 lakh was allegedly snatched from a man who was carrying the money after withdrawing it from a bank in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi Lake area.
The incident took place in the jurisdiction of Dhanmondi Police Station on Sunday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Tanvir Abedin Jewel, Mojibur Rahman and Captain Zakir.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Imdadul Islam Tayyab confirmed the incident to TTMES of Bangladesh, saying police reached the spot after receiving a call through the national emergency helpline 999.
Police initially arrested Tanvir Abedin Jewel from the scene. Later, separate raids led to the arrests of Mojibur Rahman and Captain Zakir.
According to police, the victim went to the Dhanmondi Lake area carrying Tk38 lakh to purchase gold. The suspects allegedly took the money from him on the pretext of providing gold and attempted to flee.
Local residents noticed the incident and informed police. Officers later arrived at the scene and arrested one person, while the other two were detained during subsequent operations.
Police said they were investigating whether anyone else was involved in the incident. Efforts are also underway to recover the snatched money.
