At least five people, including a brother and sister, have died and five others remain missing after a floating drum bridge over the Brahmaputra River capsized under the weight of a crowd in Dewanganj Upazila of Jamalpur.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon in front of the Dewanganj Model Police Station, where a temporary floating bridge had been installed for public movement and leisure during the Eid holiday.

The deceased have been identified as Maya Moni, daughter of Zainal Abedin of Dakatia Para; Khadija Akter and Motaleb Hossain, siblings, children of Sher Ali from Jhalur Char; 12-year-old Abir, son of Habibullah from Beltali Municipality, and Nihad, son of Zainal Abedin from Dakatia village.

Police said the bridge gave way after being overloaded beyond its capacity, causing the middle section to collapse and several children to fall into the river.

Rescue operations were immediately launched, involving police, fire service personnel, and members of the army. Four bodies have been recovered so far, and efforts are ongoing to locate the missing six.

Authorities confirmed that more details would be released as rescue and recovery work continues.
