Three members of a muggers’ gang were arrested following a standoff with police in the capital’s Mohammadpur area early Monday. The arrests followed a police operation launched after a female police official was mugged, during which the suspects attacked the responding officers.
The arrested individuals have been identified as two brothers, Palash and Sakib, and their brother-in-law, Biplob Hossain. Palash and Sakib are the sons of Lokman Sarker, from the Hemadighi TNT Molla Garage area under Tongi East Police Station in Gazipur.
According to police sources, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Police Commissioner Shamima Yasmin was travelling by rickshaw towards Labaid in Dhanmondi on Saturday morning when a motorcycle-borne gang snatched her bag.
Although she pursued the muggers, they managed to escape, prompting her to file a written complaint.
Mir Asaduzzaman, additional deputy commissioner (admin) of Ramna Division, said an operation to apprehend the gang commenced on Sunday night. On Monday, police spotted the gang committing another mugging in the Dhanmondi 27 area and gave chase as they attempted to flee towards Mohammadpur.
Upon reaching Mohammadpur Town Hall, the gang launched an attack on the police team. In response, police fired four rounds in self-defence, leaving one suspect with a gunshot wound to the leg.
While three suspects were apprehended at the scene, two other members of the five-man gang managed to escape. During the operation, police recovered a significant cache of weapons, including machetes, Chinese axes, and toy revolvers.
ADC Mir Asaduzzaman confirmed that the gang members are closely related, noting that the group operated as a family unit.
