At least 22 people were injured in a serious road accident on the Tangail–Mymensingh highway on Saturday morning.
The accident occurred at around 7:30am in the Gunagram area of Haripur when a Prantik Paribahan bus travelling from Mymensingh to Tangail collided head-on with a Binimoy Paribahan passenger bus coming from the opposite direction.
Among the injured, the condition of 12 people was reported to be critical.
According to eyewitnesses, dense morning fog severely reduced visibility on the highway, causing both vehicles to lose control.
The collision badly damaged the front sections of both buses, prompting local residents and Fire Service personnel to rush to the scene and rescue the injured passengers.
The injured were initially taken to Ghatail Upazila Health Complex and Tangail General Hospital for treatment.
Ghatail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Moksedur Rahman told TIMES that at least 22 people were injured in the accident.
“Ten of them were released after receiving first aid, while the remaining 12 critically injured victims were referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation in Dhaka,” he said.
He added that preliminary investigations suggest the accident occurred due to dense fog, which prevented drivers from seeing oncoming vehicles.
The damaged buses have been recovered and taken to the police station, and legal proceedings are underway, he said.
Ghatail Assistant Commissioner (Land) Zahidur Rahman said officials rushed to the spot after receiving news of the accident and ensured that the injured were taken to Ghatail Upazila Health Complex.
He said the upazila administration is closely monitoring their treatment.
Police urged drivers to reduce speed, use headlights and strictly follow traffic rules during foggy conditions, warning that dense winter fog significantly increases the risk of road accidents.
