Garment manufacturer Hop Lun began the year by taking around 20,000 workers away from the production floor, organising its annual company picnic as a break from the pressures of factory work.

The programme brought together employees from Hop Lun’s eight factories across Bangladesh and was held over several days to allow participation from different shifts. The company fully funded the initiative, officials said, enabling workers from all units to attend.

Hop Lun said the annual gathering was aimed at giving employees a mental and physical break ahead of a busy production period, offering a pause from long hours and demanding routines on the factory floor.

The picnic featured cultural programmes, games and shared meals, allowing workers and management to interact outside the workplace. Organisers said the shared setting was intended to foster a sense of equality and connection across different levels of the organisation.

Hop Lun Bangladesh Country Head Nishanth Mohottige said people were the company’s core strength and described the picnic as an expression of care and respect for employees. He said refreshed and valued workers returned to work with stronger focus and commitment, adding that such initiatives could set a positive example for the ready-made garment sector.

Workers said the event provided rare relief from routine pressures. Sabina Akter, an operator at Hop Lun Apparel Limited, said employees work throughout the year with very few breaks and that the picnic allowed them to forget about work, even briefly. She said the experience made her feel proud to work at a company that showed concern for its workers.

As the programme ended and workers returned to their factories, participants said the gathering helped ease fatigue from the previous year and strengthened their sense of belonging and motivation ahead of the months to come.
