Two people, including a woman, were killed and four others sustained injuries in separate incidents of lightning strikes across Jhenaidah district on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Asadul Islam, 45, a resident of Kushtia, and Anna Khatun, 48, wife of Anisur Rahman from Damukdia village in Shailkupa Upazila.
According to local residents and police, the casualties occurred during sudden storms and rainfall that swept through the district starting between 5pm and 6pm.
Asadul Islam, a seasonal worker, was harvesting and binding paddy in a field at Mayadharpur village in Sadar Upazila when he was struck by lightning. Local residents rescued him and another worker and rushed them to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, where the duty doctor declared Asadul dead on arrival. The other injured worker received primary treatment.
In a separate incident in Shailkupa, Anna Khatun was killed by a lightning strike while she was gathering mangoes during the storm at approximately 6:00 pm. Shailkupa Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Humayun Kabir Mollah confirmed the fatality.
Additionally, three women were injured by lightning in Dhopaghata Gobindpur and Dogachhi villages of Sadar Upazila. Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the reports of these injuries.
Dr Fariha Tahsin, the on-duty doctor at the emergency department of Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, said one person died before reaching the facility and four others are currently undergoing treatment.
