Authorities seized 153 gold bars from the cargo hold of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight arriving from Dubai at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Saturday.
According to a press release, the flight, BG-348, landed at the airport’s C-02 boarding bridge at approximately 9:08pm.
Based on prior intelligence, the aircraft had been under continuous surveillance even before landing.
Following its arrival, a joint operation was launched by intelligence agencies and Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel.
During a detailed search of the cargo hold, officers discovered the gold bars concealed behind a toilet panel, opened with the assistance of the airline’s technical team.
The bars were carefully wrapped in white cloth, says the press release.
Each gold bar weighs 116 grams, bringing the total haul to 17.784 kilograms, with a current market value of roughly Tk38 crore. The recovered gold was handed over to the airport customs authority in accordance with regulations.
Investigations into those involved have already begun by relevant intelligence agencies. Airport security has been strengthened, and authorities pledged to continue anti-smuggling operations to protect state assets.
Aviation Security (AVSEC) affirmed its constant readiness to ensure passenger safety and overall airport security.
