14 years ago, a legend was born when Indian cinema witnessed a spectacle that redefined the blockbuster experience. Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan’s ambitious sci-fi venture, ‘Ra.One’, hit theatres on October 24, 2011, kicking off the five-day Diwali weekend. Today’s TIMES Blockbuster is an ode to the film’s bold leap into the future.
Released in 2D, 3D and dubbed into Tamil and Telugu at that time, the film promised a collision of mythology, futuristic technology and gravity-defying superhero action.
With three international premieres over two days, it marked the largest global theatrical release for an Indian film at the time, setting a sky-high audience and commercial expectations.
Ra.One sits alongside Bollywood’s other superhero and sci-fi ventures such as ‘Krish’, ‘Tarzan: The Wonder Car’ and ‘Robot’ (‘Enthiran’ in Tamil), but it brought a paradigm shift with its scale, international collaborations and a futuristic vision.
Directed by Anubhav Sinha and produced by Khan, Ra.One pushed Bollywood’s technical boundaries; the film’s visual effects were unprecedented, with international VFX studios helping create Ra.One’s digital villain and elaborate action sequences.
Scenes, such as the rooftop chase and the final digital showdown became iconic examples of how cinema in this subcontinent could blend CGI with storytelling and challenge Hollywood. Critics praised the action, direction, performances of Khan and Arjun Rampal and the visual spectacle, though the script received mixed reviews.
Musically, Ra.One made history through the chart-topping track ‘Chammak Challo’, performed by global superstar Akon and composed by Vishal–Shekhar.
While Bollywood had seen Western artists like Kylie Minogue (Chiggy Wiggy) and Ludacris (Shera Di Kaum in Speedy Singhs), none had combined such global appeal with a major Bollywood blockbuster. The song’s electronic elements, combined with Akon’s voice and Vishal–Shekhar’s production, became a cultural phenomenon, solidifying the film’s international footprint.
Upon release, Ra.One became a commercial success, earning over ₹207 crore (US$24 million) worldwide on a ₹150 crore (US$18 million) budget. Domestically, it ranked as the third highest-grossing Hindi film of 2011, and globally the second highest, breaking numerous opening-day box-office records. The film later won several awards for its technical brilliance, including a National Film Award, a Filmfare Award and four International Indian Film Academy Awards, particularly recognizing its visual effects and sound design.
The film’s legacy also shaped careers. Khan continues to dominate, recently winning the National Award for Best Actor for Jawan and preparing for King alongside Deepika Padukone and daughter Suhana Khan.
Kareena Kapoor Khan sustained her star power with hits like ‘Heroine’ (2012), ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ (2015), ‘Ki & Ka’ (2016), ‘Good Newwz’ (2019) and ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ (2022), proving her versatility across commercial and acclaimed films.
14 years later, Ra.One is remembered as a film ahead of its time. It dared to envision a superhero in India’s technological era, blending spectacle, music and moral storytelling. It challenged norms, pushed cinematic boundaries and left an indelible mark on Bollywood’s journey into sci-fi and superhero cinema.
