At least 10 people were injured during a clash between supporters of the BNP candidate and a rebel (independent) candidate in the Siloi Union char area of Munshiganj-3 constituency.
Six of the injured individuals have been admitted to Munshiganj General Hospital.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening at the Purba Rakhikandi Government Primary School centre field in Sadar upazila, triggering widespread tension in the locality.
According to reports, all the injured are supporters of the independent candidate. Those hospitalised have been identified as Iqbal Khan (37), Abdur Jabbar Bepari (53), Mahabubur Hasan Sohag (42), Jewel Rana (35), and Joy Bepari (30).
One of the victims, Abdur Jabbar Bepari, alleged that approximately 100 people representing the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ (BNP symbol) attacked supporters of the ‘Football’ symbol with sticks, iron rods, and local weapons.
Md Mominul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station, stated that additional police forces were dispatched to the scene and the situation is now under control.
The BNP has nominated Kamruzzaman Ratan for the Munshiganj-3 seat. However, Mohammad Mohiuddin Ahmed, a former member secretary of the Munshiganj district BNP, is contesting as an independent candidate with the ‘Football’ symbol after failing to secure the party’s official nomination.
