A 22-year-old man was killed in a gunfight between two rival groups of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Mollakandi Union of Munshiganj on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Tuhin Dewan, son of Selim Dewan of Dakshin Beherkandi village.
Locals said the clash erupted over a long-running dispute for dominance at the Munshiganj Primary School grounds. Two rival groups—one led by Mollakandi Union BNP leader Ozir Ali and another loyal to Awlad Group follower Liton Bepari allegedly attacked Tuhin with a cocktail explosion followed by gunfire.
Tuhin was hit by bullets and collapsed on the spot. He was taken to Munshiganj General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Tuhin was known to be a supporter of Mollakandi Union BNP President Wahid Mollah and BNP leader Atiq Mallick. Sources said the feud between the factions was fuelled by competition for local political control. Multiple bullet wounds were found on his back and neck.
After the killing, supporters of Wahid Mollah and Atiq Mallick gathered in the area, triggering tension across the village. Additional police personnel have been deployed to prevent further violence.
Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police Firoz Kabir said an operation is underway to arrest those involved, and law enforcement is closely monitoring the situation.
