The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has set February 9 as the deadline for submitting the investigation report in the case over the killing of student Shaikh Ashabul Yamin and 21 others during the July-August mass uprising.
The accused are facing charges of crimes against humanity, including the disposal of Yamin’s body from a police APC.
During the hearing, Prosecutor Saimum Reza Talukdar told the court that the prosecution needed four weeks to complete the investigation report.
The tribunal granted the request, setting the deadline for February 9.
Of the 15 accused, seven are currently in custody, including former additional superintendent of police (Crime and Operations) Md Abdullahil Kafi, former additional superintendent of police (Savar Circle) Md Shahidul Islam, ASI Md Ali, Nayek Sohel, Mizanur Rahman, Zakir Hossain, and constable Masud Mia. The remaining eight are still at large.
Shaikh Ashabul Yamin, a student of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), was shot dead by police on 18 July, 2024, while participating in a “Complete shutdown” programme as part of an anti-discrimination student movement in Savar.
Eyewitnesses reported that Yamin’s body was placed on a police APC and later thrown from it. In total, 22 people were allegedly shot and killed in Savar and Ashulia during the crackdown.
