Journalist and popular TV anchor Zillur Rahman has provided an explanation for why he has been questioning a government he once helped to form.
“I’m not unhappy. I’m just doing my job,” he said in a Facebook post.
As a journalist and member of the media and think tank community, Zillur said, “My role has always been to question power—be it governments, institutions, or politicians. That’s not just a choice; it’s a responsibility. I’ve done this for years, during many regimes, and I will continue to do so—because critical thinking and accountability are essential in any democratic society.”
“Yes, I stood with the students and people of Bangladesh during the July-August mass upsurge. I carry within me the spirit of that movement. But now, when I raise my voice or critique decisions, some say I’m never happy, or that I’ll never support any government—even if it were my own. Others assume I’m bitter for not being offered a position in government. Even a few close to me seem to think that way,” he said.
But they’re mistaken, Zillur Rahman said adding: I am one of the happiest people I know. And I’ve said it many times—I have no interest in joining politics or holding any government post, ever. I have no business to settle. No power to chase. I believe serving the government is not the only way to serve the people. I serve the public by doing what I’ve always done: asking hard questions, holding power to account, and defending truth—even when it’s uncomfortable.
“That’s not negativity. That’s democracy.”
