HBO has revealed the first major cast details for its upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ series, set to premiere during Christmas. The ambitious adaptation will retell all seven books by J.K. Rowling, with each novel forming a full season.
Leading the new generation are relative newcomers. Dominic McLaughlin takes on the role of Harry Potter, joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The trio emerged from an extensive casting process that saw tens of thousands audition.
The adult ensemble brings established names into key roles. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, while Paapa Essiedu takes on Severus Snape. Janet McTeer is cast as Minerva McGonagall, with Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
Among other notable additions, Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby will portray Petunia and Vernon Dursley, while Katherine Parkinson steps into the role of Molly Weasley. Lox Pratt has been cast as Draco Malfoy.
The series will also feature Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Anton Lesser as wandmaker Garrick Ollivander.
In a notable link to the original films, Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick, making him the only returning cast member from the earlier adaptations.
The project is led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. The production is backed by Warner Bros. Television and Brontë Film and TV.
