Chairman of the Selection Committee of the BCB, Habibul Bashar addressed Shakib Al Hasan’s absence on Saturday, after Bangladesh national cricket team named their squad for the opening New Zealand ODIs in Dhaka.

Bashar made it clear that readiness, not reputation, will decide the all-rounder’s return. Bashar went straight to the point. “I have spoken to Shakib once. I asked if he is ready, because where he is now, regular cricket does not happen and there are limited training opportunities. Fitness work can be done, but regular cricket is not played there, although he is playing some cricket.” He did not shut the door, but he did not open it either. He set a clear benchmark.

That line cuts through sentiment. Shakib is still the biggest name in Bangladesh Cricket, but Bashar wants substance. International cricket demands rhythm, not just reputation.

Bashar also revealed the long-term thinking. “If everything goes well, we want Shakib for a long period. The discussion has been about how prepared he is. International cricket requires many things, and preparation is very important.” He made it clear this is not a quick fix. Bangladesh want durability, not a short-term headline.
