Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Shahadat Hossain has announced that residents will no longer have to pay a separate bill for door-to-door waste collection from March.

He made the announcement on Sunday while inaugurating a playground and walkway at H Block in Halishahar.

Speaking to journalists, the mayor said no money will be collected from city dwellers for door-to-door waste collection from March.

He urged residents to hand over waste regularly when workers arrive at the scheduled time, saying this will prevent garbage accumulation, reduce mosquito infestation and keep the environment clean.

Shahadat Hossain said the city corporation has taken an initiative to produce biogas from waste in Halishahar.

He said the feasibility study of the project is now at its final stage and expressed hope that waste could be converted into resources once the project is implemented.

Asked about the reason for scrapping the fee collection, he said many residents were reluctant to pay and various complaints had been raised.

He said the city corporation has decided to operate the service under its own management.

Existing vendors will be coordinated and workers engaged, and necessary subsidies will be provided, he added.
