In an effort to reduce pre-Eid traffic congestion in Tangail city, a volunteer team has been deployed under the supervision of State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock and Tangail-5 MP Sultan Salauddin Tuku.
The initiative, which began on 5 March, is set to continue until the night before Eid.
The volunteers are assisting traffic management on busy city roads, markets, and shopping areas, helping ensure smoother movement for residents and shoppers.
Currently, 16 volunteers are stationed at key points – five at the old bus stand, five at Nirala Mor, five at Kalibari Bridge and Bindubasini Girls School junctions, and one at the Kalsul area.
Wearing yellow and teal uniforms marked “Under the overall supervision of State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku”, the volunteers use whistles to regulate vehicle flow from morning until night.
Local transport workers have praised the initiative. Auto-rickshaw driver Abdur Rahman said the volunteers’ presence has brought order to the previously chaotic traffic, though he noted that congestion remains due to the high number of rickshaws and auto-rickshaws.
Rickshaw driver Ashraf Ali added that the volunteers’ guidance has reduced waiting times at busy junctions, benefiting both drivers and passengers.
Saleh Mohammad Shafi Ethan, secretary of the district volunteer team, said that 16 volunteers are managing traffic from 15th to 22nd Ramadan, and their number will increase to 30 from 22nd Ramadan until Eid to meet growing demand.
Tangail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin praised the initiative, saying the volunteers’ support alongside the district police has significantly eased traffic congestion in the city.
State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku emphasised the purpose of the program, “Traffic pressure rises sharply before Eid, causing hardships for residents.
This volunteer team has been deployed to reduce those difficulties. Similar public welfare initiatives will continue in the future, and we will take steps to address Tangail’s traffic issues permanently.”
