Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal has said that the introduction of virtual courts has increased the speed of case disposal while also saving energy.
He made the remarks at a press briefing at his office on Wednesday afternoon.
The Attorney General said “The virtual court system has had a positive impact amid the ongoing energy crisis.”
He added “Cases can now be disposed of more quickly through virtual hearings. Earlier, court proceedings were conducted physically, which often involved unnecessary procedures.”
“The virtual court system is helping avoid such unnecessary processes,” he noted.
He further said that if hearings are conducted virtually, cases will be resolved faster.
Earlier, in a notification issued on 19 April, the Supreme Court’s High Court Division said that judicial proceedings would be held virtually every Wednesday and Thursday.
The decision was taken considering the global economic situation and to ensure savings in fuel and electricity.
The Attorney General also said “The move would help address the ongoing energy crisis and bring positive results.”
Meanwhile, Supreme Court lawyers have announced a black flag procession if the decision to run virtual courts is not withdrawn immediately. They also held a human chain at the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The lawyers said hearings cannot be conducted virtually in any way and warned that it could disrupt court proceedings.
They questioned why the Supreme Court alone should operate virtually when all other offices are functioning normally.
They further said that even under virtual proceedings, lawyers still have to travel to court, which means fuel is still being used.
They added that although courtrooms are not actively in session, air conditioners and lights remain switched on.
