A young man from Sylhet has died by suicide while vacationing with friends in Cox’s Bazar. Farhad Hossain Saurav, 21, ended his life during a video call with his girlfriend following an argument.
The incident occurred at a residential hotel in Cox’s Bazar city. Saurav’s body was recovered from room 507 of Hotel World Beach in the Kolatoli area on Thursday night.
Saurav, son of Mohammad Motiur Rahman from Manipur area of South Surma in Sylhet city, was among five friends who had travelled together from Sylhet.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Ilias Khan confirmed the incident.
According to police sources, Saurav and his four friends were all first-year honours students at Sylhet MC College who had travelled to Cox’s Bazar on motorcycles.
The victim’s friend Abir, speaking to journalists before being taken into police custody, recounted the tragic sequence of events. The five friends had checked into the hotel on Thursday afternoon, and four of them later went out to shop, leaving Saurav in the room.
Abir stated shortly after, Saurav’s partner Shipu called to report that Saurav was attempting suicide while she was on call.
“We broke down the door upon hearing this and found Saurav hanging by the neck,” Abir said, describing the traumatic discovery.
Despite rushing him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, the on-duty physician declared Saurav dead on arrival.
Additional DIG of the Tourist Police Cox’s Bazar Region Md Apel Mahmud, provided further context, noting that friends reported Saurav and Shipu had been experiencing relationship difficulties for the past two days. The situation escalated during the video call, culminating in the tragic outcome.
Saurav’s body remained at Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue until Friday afternoon. The tourist police official confirmed that the body would be handed over to the family after completing necessary legal procedures.
