A van driver was killed after being crushed under his loaded van following a collision with an autorickshaw in the Dholaipar area of Shyampur in the capital.

The accident occurred around 1:30pm on Sunday (17 May). The victim was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 37.

Passers-by rescued him in critical condition and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 2:45pm.

Md Mizanur Rahman, who brought him to the hospital, said Shafiqul was driving a van loaded with paper carton materials in front of Hamida Petrol Pump in Dholaipar when it collided with an autorickshaw.

The heavily loaded van overturned after the collision, trapping Shafiqul underneath and leaving him seriously injured, he said.

Shafiqul’s elder brother, Md Shariful Islam, said their home is in Rajnagar village under Palashbari upazila in Gaibandha. Their father was the late Shahidul Islam.

He said Shafiqul had been living in the Basabo Khelar Math area of Sabujbagh in Dhaka and had left in the morning carrying carton-making materials towards Shyampur.

The family learned about the accident over the phone in the afternoon and later identified his body at the hospital.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical police camp, said the body has been kept at the morgue and Shyampur Police Station has been informed about the incident.
