The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted the Bangladesh sponsored “Culture of Peace” resolution, reaffirming the global commitment to dialogue, tolerance, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence.
The resolution, titled “Follow up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace,” was adopted on Friday in New York, renewing international support for promoting peace through dialogue, mutual understanding, and multilateral cooperation, reports BSS.
Introducing the resolution, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said that building peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies requires sustained dialogue, mutual understanding, respect for diversity, and steadfast adherence to the principles of the UN Charter.
He expressed his gratitude to member states for their constructive engagement and broad support for the resolution.
He also called for renewed collective efforts to promote dialogue over division, cooperation over conflict, and understanding over intolerance.
Originally adopted in 1999 at the initiative of Bangladesh, the resolution has since become the United Nations’ principal framework for advancing a global culture of peace.
The framework promotes values such as respect for diversity, tolerance, solidarity, and non violence. It reinforces international efforts to prevent conflicts, foster peaceful coexistence, and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
