Fifty years after the historic summer of 1976, the United Kingdom is facing a “new normal” where temperatures exceeding 40C are no longer a distant threat but a looming reality, according to climate experts and meteorological data.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued its second-ever red heat health alert for six regions of England, while the Met Office has released a rare red weather warning as temperatures are predicted to surpass 40C.
Residents are being advised to close doors, windows, and curtains to maintain cool indoor temperatures, reports Guardian.
The heatwave of 1976 remains seared into the national memory, characterised by 15 consecutive days where temperatures exceeded 32C. That summer saw failed harvests, a 12% rise in food prices, and the importation of an extra million tonnes of grain.
At its peak, the heat resulted in 250 deaths per day. However, experts note that while 32C was once shocking, it is no longer an outlier in the current climate.
While global average temperatures have risen by approximately 1C over the last 50 years, southern England has experienced a sharper increase of between 3C and 4C. Ed Hawkins, a professor of climate science at the University of Reading, said greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels have fundamentally altered British summers.
“Our new research shows that a comparable event to 1976 would be 3 degrees hotter today,” Professor Hawkins said, adding that summers are becoming “increasingly unrecognisable”.
The human cost of this shift is significant. Laura Tobin, an English broadcast meteorologist and scientist, reflected on the first red heat health alert in 2022, which saw temperatures hit 40C. That event resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths in the UK and 61,000 across Europe. “It has stopped becoming a hot weather story and it has become an extreme weather story,” she remarked.
The crisis extends to water security. The 1976 drought forced many households to rely on standpipes. New modelling by Hayley Fowler, a professor of climate change impacts at Newcastle University, suggests that if the 1976 heatwave occurred today, it would be 20% drier with a 10% greater water deficit. Without significant investment in reservoirs and leakage reduction, England could face a public water supply shortfall of 5 billion litres per day by 2055.
Looking ahead, Met Office projections for the 2050s suggest a 14-day heatwave could see temperatures of over 40C for nine consecutive days. Under this modelling, temperatures could peak at 45C in England, 41C in Wales, 38C in Scotland, and 30C in Northern Ireland.
Emma Pinchbeck, Chief Executive of the Climate Change Committee, warned that the climate has changed fundamentally between generations. “What was extraordinary for my mother’s generation, is not extraordinary for my children,” she said, emphasising the need to prepare for a different climate even if emissions are reduced.
