At least 21 people, including 20 schoolchildren, were killed after a bus returning from a school trip veered off the road and overturned in Uganda, police said on Friday.
The bus, carrying pupils from King David Junior School in the capital Kampala, was returning from Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa district when the accident occurred, reports AFP/BSS.
Preliminary investigations found that the driver lost control of the vehicle before it left the road, struck a large roadside rock and overturned, police said in a statement.
The crash killed one adult man and 20 pupils, while three adult men and several children were injured.
Police released an image showing the badly damaged bus lying overturned and said several of the injured were receiving treatment in hospital.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is under way.
Uganda has a poor road safety record, with fatal bus and truck crashes frequently reported on the country’s often poorly maintained highways.
At least 46 people were killed when two buses collided on a major highway in October.
Official figures showed that Uganda recorded 4,434 fatal road crashes and 5,144 deaths in 2024.
