A court has imposed a foreign travel ban on Siddique Nazmul Alam, former central general secretary of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is currently investigating allegations against the Chhatra League leader concerning the illegal acquisition of wealth, money laundering, and acquiring assets abroad.
On Monday, Judge Shahjahan Kabir of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court issued the order following an application by the ACC.
ACC Assistant Director Md Jafar Sadek Shibli submitted the application to the court seeking a ban on Nazmul Alam’s departure from the country.
According to the application, Siddique Nazmul Alam attempted to legitimise unlawfully earned funds by transferring them into bank accounts operated in his own name and in the names of related individuals.
It also mentioned allegations of money laundering by transferring funds abroad and acquiring assets, regarding which the ACC’s inquiry is ongoing.
The application further mentioned that Nazmul Alam was attempting to leave the country and flee to another nation, making it necessary to prohibit his foreign travel for the sake of a fair inquiry.
Following the hearing, the court issued the order banning his departure from the country.
Siddique Nazmul Alam served as the central general secretary of Chhatra League from 2011 to 2015. He has been residing outside the country for a long time.
