The bodies of five people, including three members of the same family, who were killed in a train accident in Kalihati, Tangail, have been brought to their native village, leaving relatives and neighbors in deep grief.
Early Saturday morning, the victims’ bodies arrived at Nijpara village in Dhaperhat Union, Sadullapur Upazila of Gaibandha.
As the news spread, family members gathered in anguish, and the entire village was enveloped in mourning.
The tragedy occurred Friday night around 8pm in Dhalatengar, Kalihati, when the victims, sitting on a railway track beside the highway, were struck by a passing train.
The deceased were identified as Sultan Mahmud, 28, son of Azizur Rahman of Nijpara (Ambagan) village; Rifa Resa, 24, daughter of Abdur Rashid; Nargis Akter, 42, wife of Hamiduzzaman; her son Nirab, 12; and Dola Begum, 45, mother-in-law of Nargis’s elder son and a neighbor. All were members of the same family and worked in the garment sector.
Shahadat Hossain, a member of Dhaperhat Union Parishad and resident of Nijpara, confirmed the identities of the deceased, noting that they were underprivileged garment workers who supported their families through daily labor.
The incident has left the local community shaken, underscoring the risks faced by workers in rural areas living and traveling near busy railway lines.
