President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed profound grief and offered his heartfelt condolences over the catastrophic loss of lives and widespread devastation caused by sudden flash floods and landslides in Nepal.
The president’s message, issued on Thursday, extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved families of the victims.
Prior to his statement, the government of Bangladesh had also expressed its deep shock and declared its complete readiness to provide any required rescue and relief assistance to Nepal in the current situation.
The disaster, which struck on Wednesday, has claimed at least 165 lives, while nearly 400 people remain missing, including foreign tourists, security personnel, and individuals from various other professions.
The flash floods, occurring in Bhotekoshi River, have severely affected three districts.
Initial reports indicate that the disaster was triggered near Nepal-China border, where an avalanche blocked the flow of Lohende River.
A massive accumulation of water and debris subsequently broke through, unleashing a torrent that surged into the Bhotekoshi River to cause catastrophic flooding.
As there had been no local rainfall, the residents of the affected area received no early warning of the impending deluge.
The flooding has caused massive infrastructural damage, destroying at least nine hydroelectric projects and nine branches of commercial banks.
Additionally, preliminary estimates indicate that 19 motorable bridges and approximately 40 kilometres of highways have been washed away, though a full assessment of the losses is still underway.
