A 44-year-old man named Mohammad Fakrul Hasan Farhad has been throat-slit and killed following a dispute over refusing to vacate a house in Shahjahanpur, Dhaka.
Police have arrested his elder sister Noor Afsana Nipa, 45 and brother-in-law Abdus Samad Sujon, 58 in connection with the incident.
Later, based on information provided by Sujon and as pointed out by him, the cleaver used in the murder, a red helmet, and the clothes worn at the time of the incident were recovered.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Motijheel Division Mohammad Harun Or Rashid disclosed these details at a press conference organised at the DMP Media Centre on Thursday afternoon.
At the press conference, the DC said Fakrul was killed at a house in North Shahjahanpur between 6:30pm and 9:30pm on Wednesday.
At around 9:30pm, his wife returned home and found her husband’s throat-slit body on the bed. Hearing her screams, local residents rushed to the scene. On receiving the information, Shahjahanpur Police Station officers went to the spot and initiated legal proceedings.
He said immediately following the murder, CCTV footage from the crime scene and surrounding areas was collected and analysed.
In the footage, a person wearing a red helmet was seen moving around the scene. Additionally, eyewitness statements and technological data were gathered.
By analysing these pieces of information, the suspect’s identity and location were identified. Subsequently, with the help of information technology, the victim’s brother-in-law Abdus Samad Sujon was arrested from an office on Topkhana Road in Dhaka.
Later, based on the information provided by Sujon and the location pointed out by him, a drive was conducted to recover a red helmet, the cleaver used in the murder, and the clothes worn during the incident.
Besides, various items of evidence were collected and seized from the crime scene, including blood samples from the victim’s body, wounds, bed, and other spots, hand nail swabs, a mobile phone, and cigarette butts.
The process of sending these evidence items for scientific and forensic examination is underway.
Citing the investigation, the DC said it was initially learned that the property at the crime scene originally belonged to the victim’s maternal grandfather. It was later divided between two sisters.
When the deceased Fakrul faced a financial crisis, he sold his two flats in Khilgaon and was living on the fifth floor of that house with his wife.
However, there was a dispute with his elder sister and brother-in-law over various issues, including the payment of gas and water bills for the flat. He was subjected to pressure and threats to vacate the house.
Most recently, in August, an altercation took place between them regarding vacating the house. However, the victim’s stance was that he would not leave the house until his death.
He further informed that a case has been filed with Shahjahanpur Police Station regarding the incident, naming Abdus Samad Sujon as accused No. 1 and Noor Afsana Nipa as accused No. 2.
When the two were produced before the court with a request for remand, the court granted a three-day remand. The murder plan and the specific roles of the sister and brother-in-law will be ascertained during remand interrogation.
Additionally, legal action will be taken after identifying anyone else directly or indirectly involved in the murder, he added.
