Four people were killed and two others injured when a truck hit a motorcycle and an easy-bike in Melandah upazila of Jamalpur on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred around 10am on in Burunga area of Nayanagar Union along Jamalpur-Dewanganj regional highway.
The deceased were identified as Morshed Alam, his wife Ikrama and their eight-month-old daughter Rifa, all from Indullamari in Islampur upazila, and motorcycle rider Likhon Akond.
Eyewitnesses said the truck was heading towards Jamalpur from Melandah when it first hit an oncoming motorcycle. It then crashed into a Jamalpur-bound easy-bike.
The three family members inside died on the spot, while motorcycle rider Likhon Akond died on his way to hospital after being critically injured.
The injured easy-bike driver and a motorcycle passenger were rescued and taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Eyewitness Mohammad Johurul Islam told that he had been cycling towards a nearby shop when the accident occurred. He said the truck driver ignored his calls to stop after hitting the motorcycle and continued at speed before crashing into the easy-bike.
Mohammad Rezaul Karim, a relative of the victims, said his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter had died in the accident. He demanded justice for their deaths.
After the crash, the truck driver tried to flee, but local residents stopped the vehicle in the Malancha area of Melandah. He initially escaped but was later arrested by police.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan of Melandah Circle said police had seized the truck and arrested its driver, identified as Shanto. He added that the driver was being questioned and legal action was under way.
Meanwhile, Mostafizur Rahman Babul, Member of Parliament for the Jamalpur-3 (Melandah-Madarganj), visited the accident site and promised financial assistance to the victims’ family and the injured.
The accident has left the area in mourning, with relatives grieving the deaths.
