Three Bangladeshi nationals from the Habiganj district have been brutally killed in India’s Tripura state. The victims, hailing from Chunarughat Upazila, were reportedly stabbed to death.
The deceased have been identified as 30-year-old Pondit Mia from Gazipur Union’s Basulla area, 60-year-old Sojal Mia from Kabillaspur area, and 40-year-old Jewel Mia from Alinagar area. The incident took place in the Karengichara area of Khowai police station in Tripura, located around 4-5 kilometers inside the Indian border.
According to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) from the Habiganj Battalion, the victims had crossed into India two to three days ago from the border area of Sreemangal in the Moulvibazar district. They were reportedly attacked by local Indian nationals, who suspected them to be cattle thieves. The three men were killed on the spot. Their bodies are currently in the Sampahar police station in India.
Jahir Mia, the son of Pondit Mia, shared that the three had gone to collect betel leaves in the hills on Tuesday.
They may have unknowingly crossed into Indian territory, and they were missing since then. It was later confirmed that their bodies were found in India on Wednesday evening.
Lieutenant Colonel Tanjinul Rahman, commander of BGB’s 55th battalion, confirmed that they have already reached out to the Border Security Force (BSF) and are working to verify the details and gather more information. Efforts are ongoing to ensure peace at the border, as well as to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The local Indian residents, fearing cattle theft, reportedly attacked the three men during the night, leading to their deaths at the scene.
