Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has overtaken Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, with a worldwide haul of about $1.352 billion.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Matt Damon-led epic has surpassed the $1.338 billion earned by the 2024 Marvel hit during its theatrical run.
Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey stars Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Zendaya. The film follows Odysseus as he tries to return to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
Released on 17 July, the film has continued its strong theatrical run. It has crossed $500 million in North America, while its international earnings have pushed its global total beyond $1.35 billion.
Deadpool & Wolverine had held the R-rated record since 2024, when it overtook Joker. Ryan Reynolds congratulated Nolan, the cast and crew on social media, writing: “Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car.” The remark referred to the Honda Odyssey minivan featured in Deadpool & Wolverine.
The milestone also makes The Odyssey Nolan’s highest-grossing film, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises and Oppenheimer.
Rated R for violence and some language, the 172-minute film was released by Universal Pictures.
