At least six people, including five members of the naval police, were injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on a patrol team on the Padma River in Kushtia early Wednesday.

Lakhmikunda Naval Outpost In‑charge Khondokar Shofiqul Islam confirmed the incident, which occurred around 1:30am.

Shofiqul himself was among the injured. Other police members are Inamul Haque, Shahinur Haque, Nazmul Hasan, Manik Mia, and boatman Tuhin Maltha.

The injured were admitted to Pabna General Hospital. Manik, in critical condition, was later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, while the others remain under treatment in Pabna.

Shofiqul said the patrol had gone to stop illegal sand extraction from the river. “We intercepted them from extracting sand. Then they fired at us,” he said, adding that legal action will follow.
