The passing of Ted Turner (1938-2026) is a sad moment for the global community, which has lost a prominent media tycoon, humanitarian leader, and outstanding philanthropist. Turner cannot be associated solely with the CNN since he created a completely new approach to global journalism. However, he was much more than a founder of one of the most famous news networks, because he was among the few global figures who could combine entrepreneurial spirit and moral principles. Turner had a significant impact on global communications and philanthropy by changing the rhythm of modern civilisation and introducing the idea of global cooperation and mutual understanding as the key to solving the most critical issues facing humankind today.
Turner is famous for establishing the first international television news network, CNN, in 1980 and became the world’s first 24-hour TV news network. After the establishment of the CNN network, man entered the era of immediate global consciousness, marked by coverage of wars, revolutions, natural disasters, diplomacy, and other events. Therefore, not only was Turner a businessman, but he was also a man who revolutionised the rhythm of modern civilisation through an unparalleled mechanism of global communication and dissemination of information.
However, Turner’s media career was not the only aspect of his life; he also had a rich humanitarian background. At an early age, Turner was committed to philanthropy, and later in life, he became a great humanitarian leader. In 1997, Turner made a historic donation, giving one billion dollars to the United Nations. Thus, he became the person with the largest individual charitable donation in the organisation’s history. In general, Turner’s philanthropy is not merely about money but about his unique view of the role of humans in society. The inventor of modern media believed that wealth and power could not exist without humanity since they were the primary drivers of philanthropy and cooperation between nations.
In his philanthropy career, Turner collaborated with Muhammad Yunus, one of the most prominent representatives of the developing world. Muhammad Yunus was the founder of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and later developed a new concept of poverty reduction based on ethical entrepreneurship. In contrast to Turner, Yunus came from a completely different social background. However, despite being a billionaire from the developed world and an activist from a Third World nation, both leaders shared the same idea of the role of humans in society. The friendship between Turner and Yunus is rooted in a rare convergence of humanitarian idealism, intellectual courage, and global thinking.
Professor Yunus served on the board of directors of the United Nations Foundation. However, Turner invited him personally due to his exceptional achievements and pioneering ideas for the development of poor countries. In fact, Yunus became Turner’s counselor when the UNF was founded because he believed that Yunus’ philosophy was a perfect alternative to traditional approaches to poverty eradication and social justice. Later, the two friends collaborated closely, regularly meeting to discuss various global aspects.
One of Turner’s most important activities related to Bangladesh and the Grameen philosophy. In fact, Turner visited Grameen projects in Bangladesh, and he realised that there were solutions to global poverty at the grass-root level. In particular, Turner had the opportunity to meet Grameen borrowers, mostly poor women from rural areas of Bangladesh. These women shared their stories about the benefits of microfinance programs, explaining their perspectives on life and how these initiatives helped them improve their own lives and support their families financially.
For Turner, the experience of visiting Grameen projects in Bangladesh was unique because he could see how ordinary people from a small village could help others reduce their poverty, solve their economic issues, and become self-sufficient and self-reliant. Thus, Turner realised that humanity needed to invest in people, their creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit to make them independent and able to solve global challenges. Moreover, Turner’s activity demonstrated that poverty was not a problem created by human beings but an artificial concept imposed by the existing global system.
Turner and Yunus’s friendship went beyond board meetings. In fact, Turner visited Bangladesh several times. In particular, it was mentioned that he traveled through Bangladeshi rivers to get acquainted with the local culture and people. As he was passionate about boating and sailing, he wanted to explore the country’s rivers. For Yunus, Turner was a prominent humanitarian leader who sought to draw attention to the most pressing global issues and promote the idea of peaceful coexistence among nations. In addition, Turner supported Yunus’s initiatives in microfinance and social entrepreneurship, helping him obtain international recognition. Thus, Turner believed that poverty was not an intractable issue and that the global community should work together to address it by applying creative approaches.
Overall, the friendship of Turner and Yunus is associated with ethical entrepreneurship, humanitarian leadership, and global thinking. In general, these aspects are related to a high level of humanity, moral values, and concern for other people. Thus, their friendship demonstrates that great leaders achieve their goals by serving humanity. In turn, Turner and Yunus demonstrated that ideas for creating institutions, organisations, and movements may arise everywhere, but will succeed only with proper leadership, empathy, and moral courage.
In today’s globalised world, where conflicts, inequality, nationalism, and other forms of discrimination are widespread, Ted Turner’s legacy becomes especially valuable. In fact, Turner lived in a generation that understood that humanity could survive only by learning to cooperate globally and overcoming the differences that could lead to conflict. The friendship of Turner and Yunus is a good example of this principle because it proves that great leaders and their ideas can change history and make the planet better for everyone.
Overall, Turner was a great man with excellent humanitarian skills who could inspire other people. In fact, Turner was not only an influential businessman but also a media mogul. At the same time, he became a great philanthropist who devoted significant time to promoting humanitarian causes and helping poor countries develop. Thus, Turner demonstrated that any leader should work for humanity and its interests.
In conclusion, Turner was a visionary leader and an excellent businessman who built a media empire and contributed to the development of global philanthropy and humanitarian initiatives. His friendship with Muhammad Yunus is rooted in shared ideas of global cooperation, peace, and poverty reduction. Overall, it is possible to state that Turner achieved his goals through humanitarian thinking and moral courage.
