Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal cast his vote in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election on Sunday as polling continued at the boardroom of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
Tamim took part in the election as the councillor of Old DOHS Sports Club. He is also contesting for a director’s position in Category-2, which represents Dhaka Metropolitan clubs.
Several other notable figures also voted during the day. Among them were BCB ad hoc committee members Rafiqul Islam Babu and Israfil Khosru. Former national pacer Rubel Hossain also exercised his voting rights at the BCB headquarters.
The election marks the final task of the ad hoc committee formed by the National Sports Council (NSC) after it dissolved the previous BCB board over allegations of irregularities, manipulation and abuse of power. Tamim was appointed chairman of the 11 member committee, which was tasked with holding fresh elections within 90 working days.
While the election process is moving forward, questions have been raised over the involvement of individuals with political connections among candidates across the three categories. Several contestants are linked to ruling party politicians or their families.
Voting began at 10:00am and will continue until 4:00pm. The results are expected to be announced in the evening.
A total of 39 councillors have applied to vote electronically. The e voting system was introduced for those unable to attend the polling centre in person.
The new BCB board will have 25 directors. Twenty three will be elected through the three voting categories, while the remaining two will be nominated by the NSC.
