Rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of the country was restored on Friday evening following a temporary disruption caused by the derailment of an oil-carrying train in the Lauachhara National Park area of Kamalganj Upazila, Moulvibazar.
Services resumed at approximately 8pm on Friday after a successful experimental run by the Jayantika Express. Railway authorities subsequently declared the line safe for normal operations.
According to Gour Prasad Das, the Station Master of Bhanugach Railway Station, the incident occurred during the afternoon on the Akhaura-Sylhet railway line. Several wheels of a wagon on the No. 962 oil train derailed near pillar number 294/8 in the Lauachhara National Park vicinity, leading to an immediate suspension of rail traffic.
The disruption began at roughly 4pm when Railway Nirapotta Bahini (RNB) intelligence members, who were on the train, spotted smoke as it entered the park. They alerted the locomaster, who brought the train to a halt. Upon inspection, it was discovered that four wheels of a single wagon had veered off the tracks. Relevant officials confirmed that the train was empty and was not carrying any oil at the time of the accident.
Regarding the recovery efforts, Station Master Das stated that the derailed wagon was re-railed using local jacks. Although a hydraulic tool van was prepared at Shamshernagar Station and a relief train was dispatched from Akhaura, neither was ultimately required at the scene. The line was fully reactivated following the passage of the Jayantika Express
