Police recovered the hanging body of a college student from a residence in Mirhajirbagh area of Shyampur in the capital on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Enamul Haque Bijoy, 22, a second-year higher secondary student at Shaheed Suhrawardy College.
The body was recovered around 1pm from a sixth-floor of a building on Pipe Road in Mirhajirbagh and later sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy.
According to family members, Bijoy’s mother, Runu Begum, a domestic help, and his younger brother, Md Ruman Hossain, had left home for work in the morning.
Around 11:45am, their father, Shahjahan Hawladar, a day labourer, noticed that Bijoy’s room door was locked from the inside before he was about to leave for work.
After receiving no response despite repeated calls, he looked through a gap in the door and found Bijoy hanging from a ceiling fan.
He immediately informed neighbours, and they broke open the door and entered the room. Police were later informed through the national emergency helpline 999.
Ruman said the family does not know why he took such a step.
Sub-Inspector Md Hafizur Rahman of Shyampur Police Station confirmed the incident, saying police found the door open upon arrival at the scene.
He said the body was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a rope. He added that it is suspected the incident took place on Friday night and that further investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances.
