Police detained a man accused of raping and killing a 10-year-old girl in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj on Saturday.
The incident took place in the Khaskandi Madinapara area of Baluchar Union in the afternoon.
The accused, Raja Mia, 35, was detained from the scene, police said.
Sirajdikhan Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Anwar Parvez confirmed the matter and said the suspect had primarily confessed to the crime during initial questioning.
The victim’s family is preparing to file a case, he added.
Police said Raja Mia, son of late Akbar Hawlader of Morrelganj upazila in Khulna, had been living in the same house with the victim’s family for around six years.
According to local residents and the victim’s family, family members began searching for the girl after she went missing in the afternoon. Later, they entered Raja Mia’s room and found the child’s body lying on his bed before informing police.
Sirajdikhan Police Station officers reached the scene around 4pm, recovered the body and detained the suspect over suspected involvement in the incident.
