The government plans to bring sports into the national curriculum from Class Four in primary schools.

The Ministry of Education gave this direction in an official order on Wednesday. Senior Assistant Secretary Muhammad Helal Chowdhury of the Secondary and Higher Education Division signed the order.

The move follows a meeting held on March 14. A committee formed by the Prime Minister’s Office met to plan playgrounds across the country. The State Minister for Youth and Sports led the meeting.

The meeting decided to include seven sports in the curriculum. These are football, cricket, chess, karate or volleyball, badminton, athletics, and swimming. Students from Class Four will take part in these events.

Earlier, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque had spoken about this plan. He shared the idea in an interview with Daily Times of Bangladesh before the national election. He said, “If we come to power, we will make sport compulsory in the national curriculum from Year Four. There will be five events, including football and cricket.”

The ministry has now asked for steps to include these seven sports in the curriculum. The proposal came from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
