Popular folk singer and former lawmaker Momtaz Begum has been shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam’s court passed the order following a petition on Wednesday.
Earlier, Md Azizul Haque, investigation officer of the case and a sub-inspector of Mirpur Model Police Station, produced Momtaz before the court and sought permission to show her arrested in the case.
The petition stated that evidence was found linking the accused to the incident, making it necessary to show her arrested in the case. The investigation is ongoing, and police may later seek remand for extensive questioning.
According to the case statement, on 4 August 2024, during the July uprising, complainant and victim Md Mukhtar Hossain joined a protest in Mirpur. Later police and Awami League activists attacked and opened fire to disperse the protest. Rubber bullets fired by police struck Mukhtar’s body and chest, causing him to collapse.
He later received treatment at Kurmitola hospital. Following the incident, Mukhtar filed an attempted murder case, in which Momtaz has now been shown arrested as a suspect.
