A police Sub-Inspector was shot in the leg by his service pistol at Natore Police Lines on Friday evening in what authorities described as an accident.
The injured officer, Dewan Mamun, is posted at the Police Lines.
Natore Superintendent of Police Abdul Wahab said the officer returned home after completing security duty for a foreign national and placed his pistol on a bed before entering the bathroom.
At that time, his son picked up the firearm and it discharged, leaving the officer with a bullet wound to his left leg.
Colleagues rushed him to a local hospital, where he received primary treatment before being referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
The superintendent of police visited the injured officer at a private clinic and said the incident appeared accidental.
Details would be confirmed after an investigation, he said.
