India batter Shreyas Iyer said on Thursday that he is feeling better with each passing day after suffering a serious injury during the one-day match against Australia.
The 30-year-old vice-captain injured his spleen after falling awkwardly while taking a brilliant catch to dismiss Alex Carey in the third ODI in Sydney on Saturday.
He was immediately taken to the hospital, where scans revealed internal bleeding, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed.
“I’m in the recovery process and getting better every day,” Iyer wrote on social media in his first statement since the incident.
He also thanked his fans, saying, “I’m deeply grateful for all the kind wishes and support I’ve received. It truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts.”
India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said on Tuesday that doctors and physios called Iyer’s injury “rare.”
“But rare things happen to rare talent,” Suryakumar said. “God is with him. He will recover soon, and we will take him along with us.”
Iyer is not part of India’s T20 squad currently playing Australia. The second match of the five-game series will be held at a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday after the opening game in Canberra was washed out.
