Eight students were burned in a transformer explosion at Darul Najat Women’s Madrasa in Boro Hujur Bari area of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila. The incident occurred around 4 pm on Wednesday.
Initially, the injured students received local treatment, but as the condition of three of them was critical, they were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka later that night.
The injured are Sadia Akter (12), Rubaiya (9), Ayman (6), Nusrat (10), Alia (30), Tuiba (6), Rowza (13), and Afrin (13).
Afrin’s maternal uncle, Md Anwar, said that in the afternoon, the electric transformer next to the madrasa suddenly exploded. At the time of the explosion, students were attending classes on the fourth floor of the building. When sparks from the transformer fire spread inside the madrasa, several students were burned. They were quickly rescued and taken to the hospital.
Resident physician of the Burn Institute, Shawon Bin Rahman, said on Thursday morning that eight injured students had been admitted. Among them, Sadia Akter sustained 13% burns, Rubaiya%, Ayman%, Nusrat%, Tuiba 3%, Rowza%, Alia%, and Afrin 5%.
Five of the students have been discharged after receiving primary treatment, while three remain under observation.
