Popular singer Sharmin Keya continues to make her mark on the live music circuit, particularly with her performances of folk songs.
A regular performer at stage shows throughout the year, Sharmin has developed a distinct reputation for folk music.
Organisers who have worked with her often prefer to bring her back for similar performances.
Alongside folk, she is also comfortable performing English songs and contemporary Bangladeshi music.
Although opportunities to perform at major events are relatively limited, Sharmin said the shows she does take part in are prestigious, leaving her satisfied with her work on stage.
The singer is also preparing to release two new original songs. Titled Marji, one track has been written by Shawon Mahmud, with composition and musical arrangement by Amzad Hossain.
The other, Samantaral, has lyrics by Nila Nikki and music and arrangement by Amzad Hossain.
Sharmin is celebrating her birthday today, although she has no special plans. Instead, she has asked her fans to keep her in their prayers.
“Birthdays make me think of my parents, especially. Neither of them is alive. If they were, today would certainly feel more special,” she said.
“Parents are a great blessing for every child. I pray that Allah grants my parents a place in heaven.”
Speaking about original music, Sharmin said such songs are an artist’s own creative asset and an important way to establish an individual identity.
She remained busy with stage shows until the end of last year and travelled to Japan on 13 December, where she performed for Bangladeshi expatriates in Osaka and received a warm response.
Her notable original songs on YouTube include Brishti Jodi Na Thame, Chhuio Na and Tomar Lekha Golpo.
