Shakib Al Hasan has expressed his interest to continue serving the people of Bangladesh through politics once his cricket career comes to an end.
What will define him when everything is over, cricket or politics? How will people remember him: as a legendary all-rounder or as an aspiring politician?
Speaking on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, the former Bangladesh captain discussed his life, motivations and the path he hopes to take next.
Shakib said, “I feel like I have almost completed my cricket career. Perhaps the political chapter is still ahead. It’s something I want to do for the people of Bangladesh and for the people of Magura. It has always been my wish, and it still is. Let’s see where Allah takes me.”
Shakib was elected as MP for the Magura-1 constituency in the twelfth national election. However, following the fall of the Awami League government, he did not return to Bangladesh. His entry into politics before formally ending his cricket career was not welcomed by everyone.
Although he has repeatedly tried to return home, circumstances have prevented it. He emphasised, however, that he will return and continue his political work for the country—particularly for the people of Magura.
“I definitely want to return to Bangladesh,” Shakib said during the podcast. “I am from Bangladesh, and I will go back to Bangladesh.”
