Renowned photographer and human rights activist Shahidul Alam has voiced his frustration with the Election Commission’s handling of irregularities surrounding Thursday’s national election.
In a Facebook post early on Thursday, he acknowledged that the posts he had shared might not fully reflect the situation, as they were based solely on the information sent to him.
“I have no way of knowing the extent of the rigging or who is most involved. However, it’s clear that the situation is widespread, and the EC is largely ineffective,” he wrote.
He noted that while under the Awami League’s rule there was “only one party,” the current situation appears to be “a free-for-all.”
“From what I am already witnessing, I cannot see how this election can be called ‘free, fair, and inclusive,’” he added.
Shahidul also commented on the interim government’s mixed track record. “While we may forgive its failures in some areas, the inability to conduct a proper election will damage its credibility,” he said.
He warned that unless immediate and effective measures are taken to address irregularities and hold violators accountable, the situation could become a “permanent stain” on the administration.
“Too many have sacrificed too much for our country to be reduced to this,” he concluded.
However, upon reviewing his social media accounts, only one post related to alleged vote rigging was found.
