Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman on Friday announced that financial assistance of Tk50,000 will be provided to the families of every individual who lost their lives in the recent floods across Chattogram division.
He confirmed that the organisation will ensure these funds are delivered to the bereaved families within the next three days.
Speaking at a community centre in Banshkhali, Shafiqur said Jamaat-e-Islami does not consider this assistance as “relief,” but rather as a token of support for those in distress.
The announcement followed his inspection of several areas in Banshkhali and Satkania upazilas, which have been devastated by severe flooding.
Shafiqur highlighted the gravity of the current crisis, noting that four out of eight divisions in the country are currently suffering from floods, leaving residents in an extremely vulnerable state.
He reminded the government that providing adequate support to victims from state funds is a constitutional responsibility.
The Jamaat leader further demanded that the authorities prioritise compensation for those who have lost their homes, crops, or fish farms.
He urged the public to remain vigilant to ensure that government and private aid reach the rightful recipients without being intercepted by “dacoits” or “opportunity-seekers”.
Reaffirming the party’s stance on national ownership, Shafiqur remarked that Bangladesh belongs to its 180 million people, not just the ruling party. He emphasised that representatives are sent to Parliament to act as a voice for the citizens and their welfare.
