A Dhaka court has sent four people to jail in connection with a case filed over entering the Secretariat and vandalizing property and attempting to murder.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam issued the order after a hearing on Thursday, after the investigation officer of the case, Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan, presented the accused in court and requested their detention in jail.
The accused, who went to jail, are – Ashiqur Rahman Tanvir, 19, Jeffrey Abhishek Sikder, 21, Abu Safian, 21 and Md Shakil Mia, 19.
The accused’s lawyers Salauddin Khan and Tahmina Akhter Liza held a hearing seeking their bail. Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman opposed it.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected their bail applications and ordered them to be sent to jail.
According to case details, a large group of unruly youths stormed the secretariat compound on July 22, vandalized properties and launched attacks on law enforcement officers.
Sub-inspector Golam Mahmud of Shahbagh Police Station filed the case later that day, accusing between 1,000 to 1,200 unidentified individuals.
Sources said, unidentified students from various colleges in Dhaka and self-interested miscreants organised a ‘March to the Ministry of Education’ programme with various demands, including the postponement of the HSC exam, in response to the accident that occurred at Milestone.
Initially, the students marched towards the Education Board and Education Building, but later left the education building and took up positions in front of the Ministry of Education.
Later, they illegally broke the police barricade, came in front of the main gate of the Secretariat, created a riot, and broke the gate and entered inside. When they were stopped, they threw bricks and stones at the law enforcement agencies, including the police, army, and Ansar forces on duty. Many were seriously injured.
