World number one Scottie Scheffler claimed a confidence-boosting win at the PGA Tour’s Procore Championship in Napa, California, edging Ryder Cup team-mate Ben Griffin by one shot with a closing round of five-under-par 67.

Scheffler finished on 19-under-par 269 at Silverado, overturning Griffin’s one-shot overnight lead. Griffin had a chance to force a play-off but narrowly missed a six-foot birdie putt on the 18th.

The victory marks Scheffler’s sixth title of the year and comes just weeks before he leads the United States into the Ryder Cup against Europe at Bethpage Black in New York, starting on 26 September.

“I think we’re all excited for the Ryder Cup to get here,” said the 29-year-old. “The thing I always focus on most going into tournaments is my preparation. When I step up on the first tee, I can tell myself I did everything I could to play well. I definitely feel that way going into the Ryder Cup, and I’m excited to get it started.”

Scheffler’s final round included six birdies and a lone bogey. He opened with an 11-foot birdie at the third, added further gains at the fifth and the par-three seventh with a 26-foot putt, and notched three more birdies on the back nine to secure the win.

The tournament featured 10 of US captain Keegan Bradley’s 12 Ryder Cup players, providing a strong warm-up for the squad.

Griffin finished alone in second, one shot ahead of namesake Lanto Griffin. US Open champion and Ryder Cup rookie JJ Spaun posted a six-under 66 to take sixth place.

Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo and rising American amateur Jackson Koivun shared fourth. Koivun’s top-five finish followed his role in helping the US retain the Walker Cup last week, reinforcing his reputation as a rising star.
