Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni warned several injured players that they could miss the World Cup if they fail to reach the required fitness level before the final squad deadline.
Scaloni delivered the message ahead of Argentina’s friendly against Honduras national football team in Texas. The coach plans to make his final decisions after the match against Iceland national football team on 10 June.
“If someone cannot meet even the minimum fitness level, they will be dropped. Next week is very important for the injured players,” Scaloni said.
Argentina have eight regular first-team players dealing with fitness concerns. The list includes Nico Gonzalez, Cristian Romero, Nico Paz, Emiliano Martinez, Nahuel Molina, Gonzalo Montiel, Leandro Paredes and Julian Alvarez.
Scaloni struck a cautious tone when discussing their recovery.
“In principle, everything is going well, but we also have to see how the situation looks once we reduce the training load. Next week we will push them harder and see where they are. Until now, we did not want to take any risks.”
Argentina head into the tournament with questions over fitness rather than form. Scaloni pointed to the team’s March victory over Mauritania as evidence that his squad has not yet reached full rhythm. Argentina won 2-1, but the coach later described the performance as a possible warning sign.
Despite the concerns, Scaloni dismissed suggestions that the defending champions face added pressure.
“Argentina are always among the favourites. People always believe this team can give their best. Just because we are world champions does not mean expectations have changed.”
He added: “These players can handle pressure. And if this is considered pressure, then in my opinion real pressure is something else.”
Scaloni also refused to underestimate Honduras.
“Whenever you face a national team, you have to be cautious. Because they are made up of the best players in their country.”
Argentina begin their World Cup title defence against Algeria national football team on 17 June in Kansas City. They will also face Austria national football team and Jordan national football team in Group J.
The next week will shape several careers. Scaloni has made it clear that reputation alone will not secure a place on the plane.
