Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni apologised to supporters after the team’s World Cup final defeat to Spain and thanked his players, staff and fans in an emotional social media message published seven days after the tournament ended.
Scaloni posted the message after leaving his hometown of Pujato. The 48-year-old admitted he felt disappointed after missing the chance to win another World Cup but praised the unity that carried Argentina through the tournament.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t bring you another Cup.”
Scaloni described the emotions that followed the final defeat in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
“Sadness and joy have intertwined, tears and smiles, anguish and tranquility.”
The Argentina coach reserved special praise for his squad. He revealed he often calls them “my warriors” when speaking with his wife and said their commitment remained his biggest source of pride throughout the competition.
Scaloni also responded to criticism aimed at Argentina during the World Cup.
“Buckets of cold water (FROM PEOPLE WHO DON’T KNOW US).”
He added that overcoming those moments represented “the true trophy” for the squad.
The coach thanked his backroom staff, players and every member of the Argentine Football Association who helped prepare the team throughout the tournament. He finished with a message that quickly spread across social media.
“Whoever has an Argentine friend has a treasure.”
Scaloni’s post also revived questions over his future. His current contract expires in December, and he has not confirmed whether he will remain in charge beyond that point. Earlier this year, he suggested he could step down when his deal ends, although the Argentine Football Association reportedly wants him to stay and plans to offer a contract until 2030.
